Bronx, NY — Former Big Apple Basketball participant Eddie Huezo is highlighting the organization’s impact after sharing how the program helped open academic and athletic pathways during a pivotal moment in his life.

Huezo first connected with Big Apple Basketball as an 18-year-old high school player in the Bronx. With little recruiting attention and uncertainty about his future, he learned of the program through a friend. His involvement led to opportunities to play college basketball, leave his neighborhood for the first time and experience dorm life — a goal he once thought was unattainable.

Support from Big Apple Basketball helped position Huezo to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. He now mentors young people in the same way the organization’s coaches once supported him, continuing the cycle of leadership and community engagement the program promotes.

Huezo’s story also underscores the role of donors and supporters who make Big Apple Basketball’s free and low-cost programming possible. Their contributions help ensure that youth can access training, mentorship and educational opportunities without financial barriers.
