Our Mission

Our Mission

Big Apple Basketball supports individuals, families, and organizations in achieving their athletic, educational, and professional goals. Through community-focused programs and events, we serve youth to adults—players and non-players—by providing pathways for development, connections, and opportunities beyond the game.

The Vision

The Vision

Big Apple Basketball envisions a world where the game inspires lifelong growth — helping individuals, families, and communities achieve excellence in athletics, education, and life. Through basketball, we build bridges of opportunity, purpose, and connection that extend far beyond the court.

Our values guide how we serve, lead, and grow as a community. They reflect the principles that shape Big Apple Basketball’s culture and impact — both on and off the court.

26 Years of Growth Through Basketball

26 Years of Growth Through Basketball

Founded in 1999 by Jason Curry, Big Apple Basketball (BAB) has grown from a professional men’s basketball touring team into a nonprofit organization that serves individuals, families, and organizations.

Since expanding its vision in 2003, BAB has developed a wide range of programs for youth, high school, college, and professional players — as well as mentoring and career initiatives that support families and non-athletes. Through training, leadership development, college and career exposure, and community engagement, the organization empowers people to reach their goals and flourish on and off the court.

Now celebrating more than 25 years of impact, Big Apple Basketball continues to educate, empower, and connect individuals through the game — fostering excellence, confidence, and purpose throughout life.

How We Began

The Birth of Big Apple Basketball

On November 12, 1999, Big Apple Basketball was launched when Jason Curry created a pro men’s touring team including himself and his friends — all former pro or college players — who earned a thrilling 70–69 victory over Columbia University’s men’s basketball team in their first-ever game.

Curry chose the name Big Apple Basketball to ensure that wherever they traveled, the team proudly represented New York City. From 1999 to 2002, the team grew in talent and traveled to play Division I programs throughout the East Coast, including Vermont, Virginia, VCU, La Salle, Delaware, and many more.

When NCAA rules changed in 2003 to prohibit club teams from competing against college programs, Curry saw an opportunity to broaden his vision. While continuing to work with professional and collegiate players, Big Apple Basketball began developing youth programs — offering mentorship, training, and exposure to help younger players gain college opportunities. This new focus connected generations of players and built a foundation centered on learning, leadership, and community.

What began as a competitive basketball initiative evolved into a movement grounded in character, opportunity, and purpose. Today, Big Apple Basketball impacts entire communities — helping people grow, connect, and prepare for life on and off the court.
